Male City is a green and pleasant town but crowded and developed compared to neighboring islets. Government buildings are located near the water front on one side, streets such as the Majeedhee Magu and the northern end of Chaandhanee Magu are lined with shops and office buildings and residential houses are perfectly situated on the remaining empty spots. The town is surrounded by a wall, also to make land filling projects possible, and will not treat tourists with nice beaches. You should visit one of its many smaller islands outside Male for some of the best and whitest beaches in the world.
Besides diving, snorkeling and other boat activities, Male is the only place with other sights. The golden dome of the Islamic Centre dominates the skyline of Male from all sides. It is a huge building that includes a mosque, library and some offices. Other highlights include the national Museum, the 17th century mosque Huskuru Miskiiy and the palace Mulee-aage of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III. Several of the nearby islands and islets are inhabited by locals or as a popular beach resort. To name a few: Baros Island Resort, Villingili, Farukolhufushi (former Club Med), Lankanfinolhu (Paradise Island), Himmafushi, Huraa and Kanifinolhu (Club Med village). All islands, also those in the inner lagoon that can be reached within 1 or 2 hours by boat are included in this dive section.
